CHAPTER 15

I spend the next morning working at Grimoire, a pleasant but uneventful shift, especially compared to my last one. Originally, I'd anticipated being dying to ask Maggie about the little old man who'd, before my eyes, suddenly morphed into a total babe. As it turns out, I’ve returned to the bookstore knowing the answer to that riddle. Still, I decide to share my experience with Maggie.

When she’s through laughing, she says, “Oh, that explains it.”

“Explains what?” I stop stocking New Arrivals—some of those books, in this case, written nearly a century ago—and turned to face her.

“Well, you didn't have the typical reaction most women have when encountering Grayson for the first time.”

“That being they fall all over themselves?”

Maggie smiles. “Pretty much, that's it. I kept wondering why you didn’t even check him out. There I was thinking you were made of steel.”

“And there I was thinking he was made of ancient.”

Maggie laughs again. “You have to admit, he has an interesting sense of humor.”

It would seem so, although what I don’t mention is that it appears more like Grayson came in to check me out. I’ve kept thinking about what he said the other night. That bit about whether I’d be interested in working with the Shadow Order. The fact is, I have no idea, since it’s the first I’ve heard of there being some sort of secret witch society. At least one that’s kept secret from other witches. Add to that, do I want to make my life any more unusual than it already is? Probably not the best idea. And something tells me I wouldn’t be sharing those particular activities with Autumn, not to mention our mother, which could complicate things even further.

On the other hand, I’ve seen what Grayson can do. He may not have the same kind of psychopomp powers as a veil witch, but there’s no doubt the dude has some serious magical mojo going on. And when my own magic failed me, he was able to put the drop on those vampires without breaking a sweat. So, yeah, I have to admit feeling a little tempted.

Maggie and I spend the morning getting the store ready for the week. Not that it’s a particularly heavy task, but Maggie keeps Grimoire open all seven days, so Monday is our day for putting on a bit of polish. Mostly, that amounts to dusting and cleaning, as well as putting misarranged books back in their proper order. At one point, I’m out back in the Special Collection, and my eyes go to the spine of Lauren Flannery’s Book of Shadows. With all that’s happened since, I’d nearly forgotten, but now that strange moment returns to me vividly. A chill runs up my spine as I remember hearing that woman’s voice. Beware the seeker!

What could that have possibly meant? At the time, it felt like a message meant for me personally. Now, I tell myself that wasn’t the case. After all, it’s not the first time I’ve had strange experiences when handling those volumes of history and spells.
